Why is Fancy Feast so popular?

Hi everyone, and happy December!

(Hasn't the year flown by?)

Two things to talk about today - I updated the Fancy Feast review after an embarrassing 10 years (!!), and I'll also cover Big Dog, some recent emails I've received, and also how Woolworths has acquired a 50% stake.

Fancy Feast - It's such a popular cat food in Australia, but why?

You can read the full updated review here, but personally I don't think Fancy Feast is a good choice for our cats.

The dry biscuits are significantly grains for cat carnivores (which is why it's so affordable) - but the packaging, marketing, and ads make it sound absolutely wonderful, as if you're feeding your cat like royalty.

Do you think it should be legal to market a cat food as "Tuna, Prawn, Mackerel, and Crab flavour", when these ingredients are likely less than 1% - or shall we say a mere speck?

Don't you think a cat food should have the main ingredient listed in big bold letters on the front of the bag, which in the case of Fancy Feast dry cat food would be "Grains and Grain Products (Wheat, Corn and Rice)"?

Imagine how many people would feed it to their cats then?

As for Big Dog, I've been a long term fan of the brand, and BARF in general, but can't ignore some of the messages I've had recently about the patties being more watery or bloody than they used to be. You can see for yourself if you read the comments on this Facebook post.

Woolworths acquired a 50% stake in Big Dog Pet Foods recently (there's an article in The Australian here), which may or may not be related - could it be ingredients have been tweaked to maximise profit?

I have to say it's good to see supermarkets selling BARF as a better alternative to big name wet and dry foods, but usually these things don't come without "quiet compromises" we aren't told about. That said, I've heard Big Dog acquired a new mincer, and are making adjustments to restore the original texture.

For those asking for alternative BARF recommendations, I feel Petzyo and Proudi are good choices - feel free to let me know your thoughts, ideally on the Reddit group here as my emails are unfortunately swamped in junk!

All the best,

David

Hi everyone! Have you noticed Facebook these days has more ads than Channel 9 during a finale of The Block? I don't know about you, but I can't find decent information anymore - and I don't know what happened to all my friends. I’ve mentioned previously how much harder it’s become to reach real people through the website these days, mostly thanks to Google’s AI Overviews happily pinching anything I write and diluting it with whatever low-quality nonsense it dredges up from the murky depths of...
